Operating expenses
are costs, other than the cost of goods sold, incurred to generate sales revenue. Operating expenses arise from the selling and administrative activities of a business. They represent nonmanufacturing period costs. Operating expenses are normally classified as either selling expenses or general and administrative expenses.
