Operating leverage
is how a company's net income reacts to changes in sales volume. Operating leverage depends on the proportion of fixed costs in total costs. The higher the proportion of fixed costs is the higher the operating leverage. Companies with high operating leverages experience significant increases in net income when sales volumes rise.
