Marketable security
is a readily tradable equity or debt security. Marketable securities can be classified as (1) trading; (2) available for sale; and (3) held-to-maturity. Trading security is bought and held with the intent to sell it in the near future. When a company has an intent and ability to hold a security to maturity, such a security is classified as held-to-maturity. Available for sale securities are securities that cannot be classified as trading or held-to-maturity.
